Bone Grafting Can Safely Improve Your Candidacy for Dental Implants

After tooth loss or extraction, the jaw bone will begin to atrophy. Many patients find that when they are ready to consider dental implants, they do not have a sufficient foundation. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure designed to add tissue and strengthen the jaw. Dr. Ehsan Pourshirazi at Guaranteed Dental Solutions is highly skilled in a variety of bone grafting procedures. He recently completed a Masters in Oral Implantology and also trained under Dr. Louie Al-Faraje at the prestigious California Implant Institute. We perform all stages of dental implants treatment at our Phoenix, AZ, offices and offer sedation options to ensure your complete comfort.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary?

Dental roots naturally stimulate the jaw. When these signals stop, the jaw begins to recede and lose density. Traditional dental implants require a certain amount of dense, healthy bone. While alternatives, such as the All-on-4® technique, can help some patients avoid a bone graft, others may require this preparatory treatment.

We perform all stages of dental implants treatment, including preparatory bone grafting, at our offices for convenient, streamlined care.

Dr. Pourshirazi will evaluate your oral structures with our advanced 3-D cone beam scanner. This tool can also be used to more accurately plan your treatment.

Types of Grafting Procedures

Dr. Pourshirazi has refined his skills to provide a variety of bone grafting procedures. He uses xenografts, which often utilize bovine tissue, and donor tissue. Depending on your needs, the doctor may recommend:

Block Grafting
Formally known as the mono-cortical block graft, this technique is often recommended for patients with a very thin dental ridge. Donor tissue is added to the ridge and then secured in place with small titanium screws.
Ridge Augmentation
This type of bone grafting is often recommended for patients who developed a bony defect following extraction. Ridge augmentation can restore the natural shape and size of the jaw.
Ridge-Split Osteotomy
In cases where the jaw is too narrow to support an implant, ridge-split osteotomy is performed to widen the bone. Dr. Pourshirazi uses osteotomes, specialized instruments, to help prevent complications.
Sinus Lift
In some cases, patients' maxillary sinuses may interfere with dental implant placement. This procedure will lift the sinus membrane to create space for grafting. Dr. Pourshirazi can choose from two techniques based on the needs of the patient.
Vertical Bone Graft with Mesh
Patients who lack sufficient jaw bone height typically require a vertical bone graft. This type of graft relies on reinforced mesh, which will be removed after healing.

Socket Preservation

If your tooth has been extracted but a dental implant will not be placed in the immediate future, Dr. Pourshirazi can perform socket preservation. Also known as site preservation, this procedure can prevent the bone from atrophying. It is important to understand this is not a permanent solution. It is highly recommended that patients plan their dental implant treatment as soon as it is plausible.

PRP and PRF

Dr. Pourshirazi often uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for more complex bone grafting procedures. During this process, a small amount of your blood is placed in a centrifuge to extract the growth factors, which are then mixed with the bone grafting material. This accelerates the natural healing process and can reduce recovery time.
